Safety Induction FAQ: Trade Providers and Contractors

Site Safety Rules

  • All Trade Providers/Contractors accessing a Viterra site must hold a valid Viterra Safety Card
  • Mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (safety boots, high-visability clothing, safety glasses, hard hat) must be worn
  • Fumigation Awareness signage on sheds and silos must be observed. Do not enter an area where these signs are present
  • Lock Out/Isolation of equipment is essential when working on plant and must never be compromised. Only appropriately trained personnel are to lock out and isolate plant
  • Machine guarding must not be removed from plant at any time by unauthorised personnel. Only appropriately trained, competent personnel are permitted to remove guarding once full isolation and risk assessment have been completed
  • People required to perform any sort of maintenance work, construction, demolition, high pressure cleaning and so on must check the site's Asbestos Register to determine whether any structure or material involved contains asbestos
  • Contractors required to work on a grain mass or other free-flowing commodity must first seek permission from the Site Manager. Risk assessments, isolations and permit procedures MUST be followed
  • Climbing on vehicles outside of a safe working platform is not permitted for any purpose at Viterra sites
  • All mobile plant used on site must comply with Viterra's Mobile Plant Standard

Do You Need to be Inducted?

If you are a Trade Provider/Contractor who requires access to a Viterra site in Australia and New Zealand, you need to demonstrate you have successfully completed the Viterra safety induction by presenting a Viterra Safety Card.

How Are You Inducted?

Before starting work at a Viterra site a Trade Provider/Contractor must undertake a site induction. The level of induction will be generic, with site/task-specific components explained at the time of sign-in at each site. Task specifics will be considered as part of the Permit System. This induction will be valid for two years.

What Does the Induction Involve?

Viterra plans to introduce an online safety induction program for contractors. Until then, trade/contractor provider induction is the Viterra Induction Standard.

All existing inducted contractors will be issued with a Viterra Safety Card, with the validity period of the card corresponding to the date each contractor was inducted.
The components of the safety induction for Trade Provider/Contractor are:

Why the Need to Present a Viterra Safety Card?

The Viterra Safety Card demonstrates the holder has been successfully inducted via a Viterra safety induction. Holders must present their Viterra Safety Card with a driver's licence or other photographic identification when requested by a Viterra employee.

Why the Need for Extra ID?

Viterra requires Safety Card holders to present a driver's licence or other photographic identification with a Viterra Safety Card to confirm they are the person who has been inducted.

Where is a Safety Card Required?

Trade Provider/Contractors (including couriers) are required to present their Safety Card when accessing the following Viterra sites:

  • Up-country grain receival sites
  • Port terminals
  • Malting plants
  • Processing and packing facilities
  • Feed mills
  • Wool stores
  • Fertiliser storage/distribution sites
  • Agri-product retail depots
  • Offices
