Sustainability

Viterra's decisions are guided by the knowledge that what we do today positions us for tomorrow and beyond. Our key sustainability challenges are climate change, water scarcity, minimising the impact on the environment, providing a safe working environment for employees and the public, and ensuring the availability of a rural workforce.

We are registered under the Energy Efficiency Opportunities Act 2006. Energy use for the group in our identified trigger year of 2005-06 was 1.76PJ (petajoules). The threshold for reporting and participation in the EEO program is 0.5PJ. You can read more in the reports below.

Other legislative programs Viterra participates in include the Environment and Resource Efficiency Plan (EREP); National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER); National Pollutant Inventory (NPI); and other state environmental planning legislation.

Waste Reduction Programs

Viterra has implemented a plastic recycling program in conjunction with Plastic Recyclers International (PRI) Pty Ltd. This partnership involves the collection and recycling of all the plastic liner used in Viterra's bunkers during the harvest period. When a bunker is emptied, the waste plastic is baled and moved to strategic sites, where PRI collect it and ship it to their recycling plant in Port Pirie, South Australia.  This plastic, which would otherwise end up in landfill, is processed using state-of-the-art technology. The waste plastic is sorted, blended and processed to create a wide variety of practical, long-lasting and environmentally-friendly products.

Enhancing Biodiversity: Native Fauna Management

Southern Hairy Nose Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) numbers are decreasing significantly in South Australia's Yorke Peninsula. In 2009, a wombat colony of significant size was identified at Wallaroo, living on buffer land owned by Viterra. As a responsible land owner, Viterra has implemented a Wombat Management Program to protect and preserve the colony on Yorke Peninsula, and to ensure that its habitat and site operations can co-exist.
