Nitrosul FAQ's

Storing Fertiliser

Viterra does not recommend storing fertiliser in any type of silo other than those designed specifically for fertiliser.

Fertiliser has a heavier bulk density than grain and, as such, does not flow as easily. To ensure fertiliser does flow, the cone angles in fertiliser silos are greater than 45 degrees - significantly sharper than the 35 and 40-degree cone angle of grain silos.

When fertiliser stops flowing it can build up rapidly on silo cones and sides, causing the silo to collapse, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

Viterra does not accept any legal liability if customers fail to comply with our recommendation against storing fertiliser in silos.

We recommend that customers:

  • Use bulk fertiliser storage systems other than silos, such as bulk bags, designated bunkers and storage sheds
  • Collect fertiliser as close as possible to the time of intended use and, where possible, do not store it from one season to the next. We note that some blends require very careful management.
