Xceed™ Oasis CL Canola
Viterra and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) have co-launched Xceed™ Oasis CL canola, a new crop option for grain growers in low rainfall cropping areas across South Australia and Victoria.
Xceed™ Oasis CL has been adapted to suit warmer, drier climates, with increased tolerance to frost, heat and drought, while also having improved seed quality, enhanced resistance to shattering and higher potential oil and protein percentages.
Xceed™ Oasis CL is currently available to growers in low rainfall areas in South Australia and Victoria from Viterra on an area based production contract basis. The targeted low rainfall zones include the Mid North around Port Pirie, areas of the northern and central Eyre Peninsula, the Mallee and Riverland areas, and North Western Victoria.
Viterra will be opening segregations for Xceed™ Oasis CL at a number of grain receival sites during the 2012/13 harvest, including Murdinga, Rudall, Balaklava, Port Pirie and Tailem Bend in South Australia, and Warracknabeal in Victoria.
Economic benefits
Compared to traditional canola, Xceed™ Oasis CL offers a wider planting window, is simpler and more economical to harvest by direct heading - saving approximately $35/ha on windrowing costs. Wheat yields have been reported to average 15-20% more after canola than after wheat, and a canola-wheat rotation can often be more profitable than wheat-wheat.
Disease break
As part of a cropping rotation, Xceed™ Oasis CL provides a valuable disease break option for cereal diseases such as Crown Rot, CCN and Take-All, along with recent reports of reduced Rhizoctonia levels. Good early control of grass weeds is always essential for a break crop like Xceed™ Oasis CL to be most effective.
Reduced production risk
Xceed™ Oasis CL is generally suited to dry land environments with a yield potential below 1.5 t/ ha - such as the Mallee, or very late sowing in high rainfall areas.
Xceed™ Oasis CL can be grown in areas where canola wasn't formerly viable - and provide greater reliability where conditions are marginal for traditional canola cultivars.
