As a global supplier of high quality ingredients, Viterra is committed to ensuring that the products it provides to customers meet rigorous food safety and quality standards. Viterra has established a comprehensive global Food Safety and Quality System that supports us in meeting these rigorous standards, as well as the increasing expectations of our customers and consumers.
Viterra’s Food Safety and Quality Management System adheres to several leading global standards.
Within our grain, malt and feed businesses, Viterra is committed to registration under the ISO 22000:2005 standard. This standard applies to organizations in the food production chain which must demonstrate their ability to control food safety hazards and ensure that food is safe for human consumption. All of Viterra’s systems are registered or are in the process of being registered to the ISO 22000:2005 standard. By October 31, 2012, the end of our fiscal year, all current facilities will be registered.
Additionally, Viterra’s Processing Group has adopted FSSC 22000:2010, an International Standard developed for the certification of Food Safety Management Systems within the food manufacturing industry. This standard combines the requirements of ISO 22000:2005 (Food Safety Management Systems requirements) and PAS 220:2008 (prerequisite programmes on food safety for food manufacturing) creating a robust system to ensure ongoing food safety. FSSC 22000:2010 is fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative, the leading organization for the harmonization of international food safety standards.
Viterra’s Food Safety and Quality System has also attained registration to the GMP+B3 standards (Good Manufacturing Practices) at certain of our Canadian grain handling facilities that ship feed commodities to the European Union. Meeting GMP+, a standard based in the Netherlands administered by GMP+ International for regulation of foreign suppliers of animal feed materials, is a requirement for supplying feed materials into the European Union.
Recently, specially designated Viterra grain handling facilities in Canada and Australia which ship canola to bio-fuel markets in Europe have been certified sustainable. In Canada, these facilities and certain farmers are certified to the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification scheme (ISCC). In Australia, certain facilities and growers are certified to the 2Bs scheme. Both the ISCC and 2Bs schemes meet the requirements of the European Union in the Renewable Energy Directive for the production and handling of sustainable biomass.
